Cancer Bats Cancer Bats

• Reviews
Cancer Bats has been a band name I have heard tossed around more than once. From the beginning, I was aware that they are a group of Canadians that have created a reputation for their impressive and extreme live show. I have seen some of my favorite hardcore bands hype them up and many of the readers through out our forums discuss them plenty, as well.

Literally exploding onto the scene, Cancer Bats have climbed up the ladder of bands that have been able to cross into the States and quickly make a name for themselves. Their first full-length release via Abacus Recordings, Birthing The Giant is an album that is jam-packed with rusty riffs, witty lyrics, and plenty aggression. —Pat Marquez–absolutepunk.net

Dead and Devine Dead and Devine
Dead and Divine is a five-piece Metalcore band out of Burlington, Ontario, Canada. Their success spawned from their 2005 EP What Really Happened At Lover's Lane on Verona Records (a label created by Shane Told of Silverstein and the band themselves).

What Really Happened At Lover's Lane beat all expectations when in its first week alone it sold nearly 1,000 copies nationwide, landing them a spot on the Canadian Billboard Top 200. This was a huge accomplishment for the group since their original formation in 2003. The band then set off on an independently booked coast to coast Canadian headlining tour that following summer, playing in as many cities as they could.

A growing interest in the band's live performance has landed them spots sharing the stage with acts such as: A Textbook Tragedy, Alexisonfire, Poison The Well, Dillinger Escape Plan, Throwdown, Cavalera Conspiracy, Silverstein, Protest The Hero, Misery Signals, Cancer Bats, August Burns Red, Hopesfall, blessthefall, Darkest Hour, The Spill Canvas, illScarlett, and Moneen.

In the fall of 2006, the band took time off touring to begin work on their full-length album. Along with locking themselves in their jamspace for hours on end, they initiated the writing process, creating and fine tuning new tracks for their second album. Following their writing stint, Dead and Divine set out on several more self-booked headlining tours including a winter tour throughout Ontario during the month of January, a February-March east coast tour, and two more full Canadian tours spanning from April to August 2007. Finally taking some time off, the band spent five days at Drive Studios with producer Steve Rizun, completing pre-production for six songs on their upcoming full-length.

They spent most of December recording their Rise Records debut at Interlace Studios with producer Kris Krummet and have since completed all tracking for the album. The album is due out March 18 on Rise/Verona Records.

The band recently shot their music video for their single "Like Wolves", off their new record "The Fanciful" with director Ben Knechtel - www.motionformusic.com (Hawk Nelson, Seconds To Go, Thousand Foot Krutch).

In July 2008, it was announced that Ryan Leger would leave the band in order to be with his girlfriend and newborn daughter.[4] The band has recently found a replacement, Kyle Anderson of Sydney. It was announced on their facebook page. Leger later joined Every Time I Die and is currently playing drums for the band.

In September 2008, the band signed with Distort Entertainment (Alexisonfire, A Textbook Tragedy, Cancer Bats, Architects, The Bronx, etc.) They went on to be a part of the Weight Of The World Cross Canada Tour with headlining band Misery Signals. Also on the tour were Haste The Day, Architects and Sights & Sounds.

The band then released "The Machines We Are" on August 4 and embarked on a Canadian tour with Straight Reads The Line and many other guest bands.[5] They again broke the Billboard Top 200 Chart, and hit #18 on the Canadian Neilsen Soundscan Hard Rock Charts, as well as landing #39 on the Canadian Neilsen Soundscan Alternative Charts. In August 2009, they shot their second video with Director Marc Ricciardelli (Alexisonfire, Bedouin Soundclash, Moneen, Cancer Bats) for their single "Neon Jesus". The video was released on September 18 2009.

Dry Country Dry Country
Originally formed in 1998 after shared decades on the bar and festival circuit, Dry County has been quickly gaining popularity all across southern Ontario. Their 2002 self titled debut CD landed 6 songs on over 50 radio stations nation wide and have been included in live to air interviews as feature artists.

They have graced the pages of country music publications and newspapers throughout Ontario and broke through the barriers at the country music festivals by packing venues such as The Lil Big Horn (Cambridge), West Seven Nightclub (Norval), Cowboy Bar (London) and Jackhammer's Night Club (Brantford). With massive fan support compounded with opening for artists such as Trooper, The Wilkinsons and Julian Austin helped Dry County end 2004 with an Ontario Country Music award nomination for Club Artist of the year. The only original act to do so. Since then, they have opened for huge Canadian country acts such as The Road Hammers, Emerson Drive, Johnny Reid and Aaron Pritchett.

Fronted by singer/songwriter Jeff Gallagher, the flamboyant bad boy of the group with 14 years of playing experience, is not only Dry County's primary songwriter, but also writes for many other artists as well.

Producer/lead guitarist Randy Solski is a 20-year veteran of the music business with an endless list of credentials. Randy is a graduate of Fanshawe College's Music Industry Arts Sound Engineering Program with a post grad degree in Digital Applications. He is also recognized as one of the top drummers in the area winning first place in two categories at the American Guild of Music drum competition. Since opening his recording studio in 1998, he has Sony Music, EMI, and Epic records credits to his name.

As equally as important to Dry County, keyboardist Don Laframboise, bass player Keith Silver and drummer Uncle Dik. All of whom come from a combined 40 plus years of touring experience as session players for various recording artists. They have not only become full time members of Dry County but are the intangible soul of the music.

With their latest release, "Waitin' On Hank", Dry County continues to gain attention and impress legions of fans all over Southern Ontario proving that this tough as nails act will always show that the edge, attitude and heart in their music has come by honestly.

Hunter Valentine Hunter Valentine
• Rock – all female trio
• Biography
You’ve been blind-sided by a new crush. Your heart has jackhammered your appetite, attention and ability to speak your native tongue right out the window. You’re a weak-kneed, cold-sweatin’, sponge-tongued mess. Friends, family, teachers, classmates and co-workers are sick of hearing about you know who. Pop radio cheese is your new best friend. All those crap songs you once hated now make sense. Suddenly–without a trace of irony–you’re a Mariah Carey fan. Baby’s in love, teetering on the brink of the glorious emotional train wreck called love. Everyone else having left the room, sweet, note-perfect, hook-sharp music remains your only friend. Hunter Valentine understands. From heartbreakers to the heartbroken, singer/guitarist Kiyomi McCloskey, drummer Laura Petracca and bassist Adrienne Lloyd got your back—as well as your love-strapped heart.

From The Marvelettes pleading “Please Mr. Postman,” and Diana Ross & The Supremes sweetly melancholy “Baby, Where Did Our Love Go,” to Sleater-Kinney's exuberant call-and-response hit “I Wanna Be Your Joey Ramone,” and Bloc Party’s Kele Okereke wailing about “This Modern Love,” the best pop songs remind us we can fall in and out of love again and again. It the cycle of love that keeps Hunter Valentine beating out their brand of love/loss-struck pop rock.

The Toronto trio first got together in the summer of 2004. Friends united by a mutual love of rocking out, singer/guitarist Kiyomi McCloskey, drummer Laura Petracca and bassist Adrienne Lloyd established Hunter Valentine as a live band by playing countless hometown shows. Not even a year later, they were invited to play both the North By Northeast festival and the Halifax Pop Explosion. Canrock MVP Ian Blurton came on board to produce a self-titled demo EP.

By the fall of 2006, armed with a battalion of garage-rock anthems for heartbreakers and the brokenhearted, they returned to the studio, this time recruiting producer Julius Butty, (Alexisonfire) and engineer Nick Blagona. Together they finessed and distilled Hunter Valentine producing their full-length debut, The Impatient Romantic, released on High Romance Music (an imprint of True North Records) in April of 2007.

Well received in Canada, The Impatient Romantic spawned a nationwide Hunter Valentine tour, which took the band everywhere from Dawson Creek, BC to Charlottetown, P.E.I., where they performed alongside everyone from Sam Roberts and Wintersleep to Social Code and Dragonette. The also performed to enthusiastic crowds at Toronto’s Pride and Montreal’s Divers/Cité as well as Southern Ontario’s Scenefest and Westfest. Hunter Valentine’s fanbase quickly grew beyond Canadian borders, and they soon followed, performing at international events like New York’s CMJ (October, 2007) and the London Calling fest in London, England (June, 2008). (Hunter Valentine will return to perform at CMJ 2009 on October 22.)

By the winter of 2008, Hunter Valentine was ready to take it to the next level. The trio recorded a collection of demos with famed guitarist Tim Welch (National Velvet, Carole Pope), which revealed a matured sense of sophistication in both the writing and arrangements of the songs. Imagine the scratched melodies of punks like Chrissie Hynde and Linda Perry meshed with the romanticism of Canadian indie rock torchbearers like Stars and the Arcade Fire and layered with the meticulous low-end of classic Motown.

In July 2009, the band reunited with producer Ian Blurton to record new material at Toronto’s Chemical Sound Studio. Armed with these fresh new recordings and a determination fostered in Canada’s independent music scene, Hunter Valentine signed a worldwide licensing agreement with Tommy Boy Records for the release of the “Lessons From the Late Night” EP to be released in February 2010.

Lead singer Kiyomi tells us what to expect,”Lessons From the Late Night represents a more grown-up Hunter Valentine. Whether its been from sitting next to a "seasoned" musician at a dive bar telling us how it is, hanging out with crush ‘til dawn hoping for a kiss, staying up too late with mom or crying all night after being rejected. We have been beaten down, picked up and set straight (but not too straight) along the way, and this record is about all of that - the story of us growing up.

Lo-Fi Lo-Fi
LO-FI was formed in 2005 to deliver a sexy, sweaty, rock, reggae, hip-hop, ska, dance party. From the dirty streets of Hamilton, Ontario, Canada, LO-FI's high energy live performances soon amassed an army of devoted fans.

LO-FI's debut album, 2006's "The Red Album" featured standout rock tracks, "The Booty", "Back Up Off Me", and a cover of The Monks, "Drug's in My Pocket". Reggae gems like, "Move Your Body" and "She's Dope!" rounded out this hungry sounding debut.

Heavy gigging for "The Red Album" saw the introduction of old-school pyrotechnics, the use of a special vibrator guitar pick, and countless other beer-spitting, whip-cream, topless-girl shenanigan's.

Work on 2008's "The Blue Album" began in 2007 and culminated in a sold-out release party at The Legendary Red Rooster in Burlington, Ontario. The album punches listeners in the mouth with rock tracks like, "Strip Club D.J." and "Long Live The Party". Always mixing styles, the ska tinged "Jolly Cut" and cross-over hit, "Wiggle Room" provide the booty shakin!

RAY D'AURIA
Vocalist
Ray D'Auria has enough energy to power a small fleet of motor vehicles. It's a fuel that burns full-throttle, ignited by the heat of his soulful voice and the power and passion of his performance. His style is unique, and has been honed over the years to what has now become the vocal force and unmistakable presence of Stir Of Echoes. Ray was introduced to Marco Ciardullo and Darryl Brown through his cousin and bass player Carmine in September of 2006. The chemistry amongst the members was immediate and the dynamic of Stir Of Echoes emerged.

MARCO CIARDULLO
Guitarist
Marco brings a rooted energetic refreshing sound of overdriven but bluesy tones that covers everything from yesterdays classics to today's new rock. He has been influenced by such acts as, Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple, Chuck Berry and the likes of Jimi Hendrix. Born and raised in the "Hammer" this guitar player knows no boundaries.

CARMINE
Bassist
Carmine is a groove crazy bass player that cut his teeth on the British blues rock explosion scene. His musical style transcends over two decades of relentless exploration of traditional blues, rock and roll, motown and funk. He's been influenced by past and current artists, but its apparent from his style and technique that he has the rare feel of such heavy weights as, Jack Bruce, John Entwhistle, and John Paul Jones.

DARRYL BROWN
Drummer
Darryl is a hard hitting, solid, groove based drummer who was influenced by such bands as AC/DC, Motley Crue, The Stray Cats, Nazareth, Deep Purple, and Led Zeppelin. Darryl has toured across the country and has been performing live since the age of 12. He has a very diverse musical background, having played many styles of music, from classical & jazz to hard rock & heavy metal. Darryl's presence is eager, energetic, and explosive and he has teamed up with a group of musicians that finally share the same musical taste.

Subb Subb
Subb is a Canadian ska punk band formed in November 1992 in St-Jean sur Richelieu, Quebec. Since their beginning in the early 90's, the band released four full-length albums, one EP and one split CD on the labels Stomp Records and Underworld Records. Though they experienced several lineup changes over the years, founding members Mart Charron and Stef Gauthier remained in the group. The band's musical style initially blended elements of punk rock, ska, and hardcore into a genre popularly known as ska punk or "ska-core," which characterized their first two albums. In 2002 they shifted gears, moving away from this sound and producing an album with a heavy pop punk influence. After a brief hiatus in 2003, the band moved back towards their ska, punk and hardcore elements.

• Reviews
Seriously, if you like psychobilly bands with great female vocals you’ll love this album and this band. It really is a must-have for fans of this genre. Sorry to all the Horrorpops fans I may have offended or pissed off; oh well, get over it. —punknews.org

It's been two years since The Creepshow released their Sell Your Soul debut and a lot has changed for the band since then. Lead singer Jen "Hellcat" Blackwood left to have a baby and was replaced by her sister, Sarah "Sin" Blackwood. Sin's voice is a bit grittier than Hellcat's, but she can still hit the high notes her sister could, and she seems to have pushed the band up a notch. That's not necessarily a bad thing, though, as it's a formula that's worked for The Creepshow before and seems to be working for them even more now.

The One Night Band The One Night Band
It’s a point that’s often been made, but it really can’t be made enough: The One Night Band are so named because they were only supposed to be together for one night.

Then a funny thing happened…

One night became two, two became three, three became four, and so on and so forth. Suddenly, The One Night Band was a bona fide thing, an everyday deal, like beautiful women walking the streets of their home town of Montreal, or cheap movies on Tuesdays. As if destined to be more than what was originally intended, the ONB has, in a few short years, grown into a force to be recognized and reckoned with.

The band that was only supposed to play one show has now played over 300 in Canada and the United States, and toured with some of the most respected names in the ska and reggae business, including Lynval Golding of The Specials, Chris Murray, and big hitters like The Aggrolites and The Toasters. Additionally, The One Night Band did their homework by collaborating and serving as a backing band for Chris Murray and JFK and played gigs with everyone from The Planet Smashers to Mikey Dread to Mad Caddies and The Briggs. And, judging from the critical praise, other bands weren’t the only people taking note.

"One Night Band are old-school visionaries delivering an old school feel to rhythms minted decades ago" —Exclaim!

"These six musicians shine miraculously at every opportunity and take advantage of their near hour in the spotlight" —Absolute Punk

"Way Back Home is an impressive debut —All Music
Now, almost three years after their debut release Way Back Home, the ONB’s much-anticipated follow-up is ready for your headphones. Their latest offering of true-blue dirty ska, soul and reggae, Hit and Run, was produced by the masterful Mr. Brian Dixon of the Aggrolites and was recorded live off the floor using antique ribbon mics to preserve the authentic sound and ethic behind this form of music. Gritty, soulful and ass-shakingly catchy, Hit and Run serves up 15 dancefloor bangers with a respectful nod to the old-school Jamaican sound while adding their own innovative and tough-as-nails new-school flavor to the mix.

Incessant touring and hectic schedules reduced ONB from its original size, going from seven tired musicians to now four road-hungry reggae enthusiasts. While that sounds like a traumatic thing to happen to a young band, it was precisely the impetus they needed; forced to explore who they are, now, they accordingly came up with a fresh and new approach that better reflects and defines what The One Night Band truly is.

Hit and Run was the product of that approach.

Catch The One Night Band as they roll through a town near you!

The Real Deal The Real Deal
• Ska, party punk, skate, bit of reggae
• Reviews
Conceived in 2003, THE REAL DEAL has since rocked stages across the North America numerous times and has had the chance to play with some incredible bands (BIGWIG, SET YOUR GOALS, BELVEDERE, ILL SCARLETT, A WILHELM SCREAM, PROTEST THE HERO, just to name a few). They've played festivals like Ska Fest and the Warped Tour. They've put out records. They've put out videos. They've been on the radio. They've been on TV. They've been broke. They've been less broke. They've always had a good time and they don't plan to stop anytime soon...

THE REAL DEAL's newest touches on just about everything a good punk record should. Catchy melodies, loud guitars, violent drums and all the energy punk rock has been lacking lately, "Hungover, but Dead Sober" is a must for your punk rock collection.

“Finally, a retaliation against the stagnant punk that seems to rule the stage these days. Self described melodic venge-core, The Reason blend powerful pop harmonies with edgy vocals, and something that other bands can't seem to offer: straight-up, honest lyrics, and a strikingly real stage presence.”
